Treatment of Back Pain

There’s an old saying in the medical field: “There are two kinds of people in this world—those with back pain, and those who will get back pain.”

Sciatica, hip pain, and back problems are common and, unfortunately, almost inevitable experiences for many adults today. In fact, 8 out of 10 Canadians will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Spending too many hours hunched over a computer, sitting at a desk, or even standing all day can lead to soreness in the lower or upper back. A painful back can significantly impact your life, affecting your mood, hindering your work, and making everyday activities feel miserable.

Who Suffers From Back Pain?

Back pain can affect anyone at almost any stage of life, but certain occupations and lifestyles carry a higher risk:

Adults and Seniors: As we age, the spine experiences wear and tear, leading to conditions like arthritis, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis.

Office Workers: Prolonged sitting, poor posture, and limited movement can cause muscle strain and spinal misalignment, contributing to back pain.

Manual Laborers: Jobs that involve heavy lifting or repetitive movements can strain the back muscles and spine, often leading to chronic pain.

Athletes: High-impact sports and intense physical activities can result in back injuries, including muscle strains or disc problems.

Pregnant Women: The added weight and changes in posture during pregnancy often cause lower back pain.

People with Poor Posture or Sedentary Lifestyles: Incorrect sitting or standing positions over extended periods can place strain on the muscles and spine, increasing the risk of back pain

What Can Cause Back Pain?

There are many actions that can cause back pain, but at the root is simple physics. Think of your back like a lever in a teeter-totter. The middle is the axis (or centre of rotation) and each end is a seat where you sit. When two children of equal weight sit, one at either, the board is in perfect balance. What would happen if the middle axis were moved towards one end or the other? It creates in imbalance, so weight must be adjusted on the other end to compensate. Your body is like a teeter totter with the spine as the axis and the back muscles balancing your weight in your front. Where there are issues impacting any part of this system, back pain can occur.
